Meeting with a builder? Here’s what to expect

September 5, 2017

The very first meeting with your builder is an important one. It is the opportunity to make sure you are the right match to effectively work together, to ensure what you want done fits within their scope and that you can come up with a plan for your new home. So, here’s what you should expect to happen.

For starters, there needs to be a clear line of communication between you. You have to be able to understand what they are suggesting as well as they need to understand what you want. Listening to each other, comprehending what will work or what each other wants and then communicating in a way that is understandable to both.

You need to have a starting idea of what it is you want and be prepared for them to make suggestions should they propose a way for that to work better. A good builder will be straightforward and honest about what you can expect from your new home. They will have the experience to understand what will work and what wont.

Do your research. A good builder will have good references. Check out some of their previous work, chat to some of the home owners. Like any position you want to make sure you are hiring the right person for the job. Visit the current site of one of their projects, look for the aspects you are wanting in a builder: safety, respectful attitude, experience and a great team.

A good builder will explain their process to you. Each builder will have a different process, so you need to ensure that this one is the right one for you and one you are comfortable with. They will give you a clear outline on what to expect, as well as provide anticipated timelines.

You should feel comfortable, understood and respected after your meeting. Your builder should have a very firm understanding of your home design and project, and you a firm understanding of their process and expected timeframe. Like any situation in which you have gone to an expert for help, ask questions! If you walk away confused about any part of the meeting it might cause problems for both of you down the track.
